Coastal Avant Garden Conversion Kits

We have taken the time to design our kits in a way that is easy to understand and simple to install.  Our goal is to provide you all the information and plants you will need to convert your lawn to a native plant environment.

How to get started

Week One

Decide if you are going to use a rebate.

Apply for rebate, if using (www.ocwatersmart.com). Please note that your rebate must be approved BEFORE ordering your kit.  We recommend you read the rebate terms and conditions.  If you are not using the rebate program then skip to week #2.

Week Two

Determine lawn removal method.

Determine the lawn removal method you will use.  See our Resources page for more information.

Question: What if the shape of my yard isn't exactly like the Avant Garden plan?

No problem!  As long as your front yard area (excluding the driveway) is between 600 to 800 sq.ft. we can modify the plan to fit.  For more information, please send an email to info@myavantgarden.com

Week Three

Prepare for the install.

  • Receive Notice to Proceed from your water agency rebate program. (if using)

  • Remove lawn

  • Order My Avant Garden Conversion Kit, click on "Buy Now.

  • Arrange plant delivery or pick-up at Tree of Life Nursery for when you are ready to plant.

You will receive a confirmation email within 48hours from Tree of Life Nursery confirming your order.

KIT INFORMATION

Conversion kits are for approx. 800 sq. feet.  Our kit is designed to be flexible.  The example plan is based on a typical Southern California residential front yard. For a completely custom solution email info@myavantgarden.com

INCLUDES:

  • Printed design plan with detailed step-by-step installation instructions.

  • Live selection of California native plants chosen for your region. You will receive between  70 - 100 containers, ranging from 1 to 5 gallons.

  • Deliveries are available (for an additional fee) or you can pick-up your plants at the Tree of Life Nursery at no charge. (Please make sure that your vehicle is large enough to transport the plants.)

  • One 30 min. introduction session (in person at Tree of Life Nursery or on phone).

  • Free native plant workshops for Avant Gardeners at Tree of Life Nursery.

  • Join the Avant Garden on-line community for tips and tricks on your new native plant garden.  Facebook, Pinterest and Houzz.

ITEMS NOT PROVIDED IN THE AVANT GARDEN KIT:

  • Organic compost (amounts in yards will be noted on the plan)

  • Organic Mulch (amounts in yards will be noted on the plan). Arborist tree chippings work well!

  • Bird baths, fountains, rain chains or statuary

  • Boulders or gravel (see Resources for local suppliers)

  • Planters / containers

  • Hardscape (pavers, outdoor tile, etc.)

Week Four

Install your garden.

Look over the design plan and determine your plant placement. We recommend you schedule your plant delivery so that you are able to plant within 1 to 3 days.  If you have questions about modifying your plan to fit your needs, please email info@myavantgarden.com

  • Amend soil

  • Buy any gravel, boulders or statuary (bird bath, art, etc.)

  • Build swale

  • Plant per plan

  • Add mulch

  • Water (Retrofit irrigation to rotators, drip or microspray if using)

Week Five

Enjoy watching your garden grow!

Your garden will take a year to become established.  Please see "Establishing your Garden" note section on My Avant Garden plan and send us a message if you have questions!
